Industry Standards F.A.Q.
What is the difference between ANSI, ASTM, and ACCT?
- ANSI – A regulatory authority on the writing of standards, which approves the process and methodology of other groups writing standards.
- ASTM – A company which writes standards to then sell to privately-run for-profit organizations.
- ACCT – A trade organization focused specifically on developing standards pertaining to the Aerial Adventure Course industry.
What standards should I follow?
There are no federal regulations governing the Aerial Adventure Course industry except for those written in the ‘Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act of 2011’. Though the most comprehensive standards are those written by the ACCT, regulations are dictated by the jurisdiction of the city, county, and state where the project is occurring. It is encouraged to start at the state level, as their regulations will most likely guide the complete regulatory process. Furthermore, it is imperative that both designers / manufacturers and owners / operators have a clear understanding of the program’s goals and essential focus, as this will often play a role in standards compliance.
What are the standards in my state?
Standards pertaining to the Aerial Adventure Course industry are evolving quickly. Every other month a new state has determined to regulate zip lines with certain standards. Therefore it is important to check in with your state prior to the commencement of any project. If no standards currently exist in your state, it may be beneficial to think forward, and determine what standards may be applied in the future.
How much will this cost and how long does the permitting process take?
Cost and time will inevitably vary state by state. Typically, the time it takes to approve permits with the entity of the state is often less than acquiring approvals with the city. Compliance with applicable regulatory standards should be valued as a strong investment, as it will enhance the quality of your project from design to operations.
How concerned should I be about the regulation of design and manufacturing?
As standards have evolved very quickly alongside the industry, owners / operators should have a heightened concern that their designers / manufacturers have a thorough understanding of the ACCT and ASTM to ensure proper compliance to installation, maintenance, and inspection regulations.
